Just like a person has a list of supplies they need to make it through their day and week, so does a dog.
As you bring a dog into the family, you need to make sure to stock the proper dog supplies to make it a happy relationship.
Collar – All dogs need a collar, whether you are going to walk them by it or not. This is a dog supply that will come in handy if you ever need to get a quick handle on your dog, and a way to wear his tags, in case he gets out and gets lost. If you are going to walk your dog by his collar, you may have to alter the kind of collar you use. If your dog is the kind that always pulls on the collar and chokes himself, you may want to use a harness-style collar instead, to make this a more comfortable experience, and avoid hurting his neck.
Leash - Taking your dog for a walk means you need a leash. There are two ways to go with these. You could either get a plain leash, where you are responsible for controlling the length while walking your dog by pulling and tightening it up, or you can choose a retractable leash that automatically can control the leash length. These are a great way to keep your dog close at hand, and out of trouble when you are out on a walk, and able to give him a little extra room to wander when i
t's safe.
Grooming – All dogs need dog supplies related to grooming, some more than others. Whether you have a long or short-haired dog, you should brush them. Brushing gets rid of excess hair and also can help get rid of dead skin and save your dog from irritation and scratching later on. For long-haired dogs you may need more brushes and combs to be able to keep their long hair manageable. You also need to look for shampoos that are safe for your dog. Some dogs have very sensitive skin, so you should monitor your dog after the first bath to make sure their skin is accepting of the soap or shampoo you chose.
Nail Trimmers – It is important to keep your dogs nails trimmed. This is especially true for indoor dogs. Outside dogs may wear their nails down a little by digging at things. Indoor dogs get no such luxury, so you need to trim their nails. If you don't the nails can grow too long, curl under, and back into the skin, which could require surgery to fix.
Tooth Brush – Dogs get plaque too. The only way to prevent doggie cavities and tooth decay is the same way people do it, brushing the teeth. You should purchase a toothbrush and dog toothpaste, which comes in liver, beef, chicken and other flavors, and start this habit on your dog as a pup. It's hard to teach older dogs to trust you putting the toothbrush in their mouth.
